Warm white solar festoon string lights for an outdoor seating area

Solar festoon or firefly lights: which suits your garden?

Festoon strings and firefly stakes both add a decorative glow, but they work in different parts of a garden. Start with where you want the light to sit: above the table or among the plants. Then check whether the charging panels can get enough direct sun.

The practical differences

Your plan Festoon strings Firefly stakes
Where the light sits Along an overhead or supported string On flexible stems above a ground stake
Typical setting Patios, pergolas and seating areas Garden beds and suitable outdoor pots
Main effect A line of warm decorative bulbs Small points of light that move in a breeze
What to measure The full hanging route, including drape The layout and number of stake positions
What both need A suitable setup, direct daylight at the panels and realistic expectations about runtime

Choose festoon lights for the space above a seating area

A festoon string helps define the edge of a pergola or the area around an outdoor table. Measure the route before ordering. A diagonal run and a deep drape both use more string than a straight measurement across the space.

Check the total length and bulb quantity for the selected option. The Revilho solar festoon listing offers 5 m and 10 bulbs per string, with one-string and two-string packs. A pack of two strings is not automatically a single connectable 10 m string. Follow the product's instructions and do not join electrical connectors unless that use is specifically permitted.

Plan the panel position as well as the hanging route. Bulbs can sit in a shaded entertaining area while a separate panel sits in direct daylight, provided the product's cable arrangement allows it. Use appropriate supports and keep the string clear of sharp edges, hot surfaces and walkways.

Choose firefly stakes for garden beds and pots

Firefly lights create small accents low in the garden. Their flexible stems move with the breeze; they are not motorised. In still weather the effect will be calmer. Place them where the stems have room to move without catching plants or protruding into a path.

The Revilho firefly lights offer four-stake and eight-stake packs, with ten warm LEDs per stake. Plan your stake positions before choosing a pack. A larger quantity gives you more individual positions; it does not establish a guaranteed illuminated area.

Check that the soil or potting mix can hold each stake securely. Keep the solar panels above surrounding foliage and clear of leaves. Do not press or pull on the flexible light stems when installing a stake.

Can you use both?

Yes, if each product has a suitable position and enough sun. A string above a table and stakes in a nearby garden bed can give the setting two different layers of light. Plan each independently rather than buying extra lights to compensate for a shaded charging location.

Neither style should be relied on as the only lighting for steps, cooking areas or obstacles. Use appropriate task and safety lighting where clear visibility is necessary. If you need light on movement near an entrance, a motion sensor wall light serves a different purpose.

What to expect from solar charging

Runtime changes with direct sunlight, weather, season, mode and placement. A cloudy day or shade from a growing plant can reduce the evening display. Follow the initial-charge instructions, keep panels clean as directed and do not immerse components. No fixed all-night runtime is promised here.

Check these details before checkout

  • Does your measured layout fit the listed length or pack quantity?
  • Can the panels receive direct daylight in the intended positions?
  • Are your supports or ground positions suitable?
  • Do the instructions permit the exposure and installation you are planning?
  • Have you allowed for processing and the delivery estimate if buying for an event?
